I’ve been addicted to Instagram lately.
Everything i did or everywhere i went, i always felt an urge to capture #instaworthy moments, carefully edit them, share them on Instagram, and then constantly check my notifications. This repeating process easily took me a minimum of 2 hours daily…
It felt okay until Vincent (my reluctant instahusband) pointed out that i was prioritising Instagram over him – or anything else. At first i was in denial, since i was so into it, thinking it was ok cos it’s just a hobby.
But then i realised that it was true.
It was scary too, because i was unconsciously idolising social media, that it’s a space to show (off) my values.
But truly, my values are supposed to be in Christ Jesus. God of the Bible doesn’t love someone because of their success, or beauty, or talents, or popularity, or whatever they do. He loves us because he made us and we are his children through Christ – God is the ultimate one who defines and provides our worth. We can contribute nothing but surrender everything to Him who does all the works. Our personal relationship with Him is all that matters.
That led to my decision of fasting from Instagram – my most used social media tool – for 1 month. And here i am at week 2, realising that i can live better without it, and i should stop using it because it’s a huge stumbling block for me… At least for a while, until i have better self-control and time management.
And i should start blogging instead.
Why “wasabi woman”?… Jks! Why blogging?
- It is a place that encourages me to share thoughts and spend more quiet time with God.
- Less showing off.
- As a non-emotional introvert, it makes me interested more in other people’s lives – how different do they live, think, and feel. Hence, i am motivated to get to know them at deeper levels – That’s actually been one of my biggest prayer requests!
- I can still share my photos and videos on blogs (since it’s still my hobby): win – win!
- I have more time and energy to live in the moment.
So i blog.
I hope this could encourage those who also struggle with social media like me.
And please share with me if you think there’s something in your life that distracts you from living intentionally, or hinders your relationship with God.
Thanks for reading and understanding!
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27 NIV
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:4-9 NIV
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26-28 NIV
“And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”
Matthew 18:9 NIV
